Hoya Fauziana ssp. Angulata (Uncommon)
Origin and Discovery:
Hoya fauziana ssp. angulata is a newly identified subspecies of Hoya fauziana, described and illustrated in a 2018 publication. This subspecies is native to the regions of Borneo and Sumatra. Both subspecies of Hoya fauziana share long lanceolate leaves, pubescent corollas, and prominent ovoid corona lobes. They can be differentiated by the orientation of the pedicels and the type and position of pubescence on the corolla.
Natural Habitat:
Hoya fauziana ssp. angulata thrives in hill Dipterocarp forests in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia (Kalimantan) and Malaysia (Sabah). As an epiphytic plant, it typically grows on trees in its natural environment, benefiting from the humid and shaded conditions found in these forests.
Description:
- Leaves: Long and lance-shaped, characteristic of the Hoya fauziana species.
- Corolla: The corolla of Hoya fauziana ssp. angulata is finely pubescent only on the tube, unlike its counterpart H. fauziana ssp. fauziana, which has more extensive pubescence.
- Pedicels: Angled, providing a key distinguishing feature from the straight pedicels of H. fauziana ssp. fauziana.
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct sunlight but be cautious of overexposure.
- Watering: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid root rot.
- Humidity: Performs well in moderate to high humidity levels. Regular misting can help maintain adequate moisture.
- Temperature: Best kept in temperatures above 57°F (14°C). It does not fare well in cold conditions.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil to prevent overwatering issues.
Fun Fact: The flowers of Hoya plants can change color based on their environment, adding an extra layer of beauty and intrigue to these plants.
