Hoya undulata (clone 2)
Origin and Discovery: Hoya undulata was first described in 2015 by researchers S. Rahayu and M. Rodda. This clone, known as Clone 2, has slightly wider leaves compared to the original. It is also native to the Kalimantan region of Indonesia, thriving in the humid lowland heath forests.
Natural Habitat: Like the original, Clone 2 of Hoya undulata is an epiphyte found in the tropical forests of Borneo. It grows on other plants and trees, enjoying the moist, shaded conditions typical of its habitat. This clone is known for forming domatia, specialized structures in the leaves that provide a habitat for ants, similar to Hoya mitrata and Hoya darwinii.
Description:
- Leaves: The leaves of Clone 2 are wider than the original Hoya undulata but still feature the characteristic undulated (wavy) margins. They can vary in color from olive green to deep burgundy with pink variegation depending on light exposure.
- Flowers: The flowers have a unique corona with lobes that develop two lateral hooked appendages, making it stand out among other Bornean Hoya species.
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. In brighter conditions, the leaves can turn a deeper burgundy.
- Watering: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid root rot.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments. Regular misting or using a humidity tray can help maintain moisture levels.
- Temperature: Best kept in temperatures above 75°F (24°C). It is sensitive to cold and should be protected from sudden temperature drops.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil to prevent overwatering issues.
Fun Fact: The domatia formed by the leaves of Clone 2 are looser compared to those of Hoya mitrata or Hoya darwinii, providing a unique adaptation that allows ants to inhabit the plant.
