Hoya subquintuplinervis (EPC816, veiny)
Origin and Description:
Hoya subquintuplinervis (EPC816, veiny) is a gorgeous clone that originated from the renowned Epiphytica garden in Thailand, identifiable by its EPC816 accession number. This particular Hoya is admired for its distinct, prominently veined, oval-shaped leaves. The veining is a key visual feature, with light-colored veins set against the darker green leaf surface. The plant produces clusters of small, all-white, delicate flowers that add to its charm. Unlike other Hoyas, there is no pink in the center of these blooms, making them a pure white delight with a subtle fragrance.
Natural Habitat:
Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, especially Northern Thailand, Hoya subquintuplinervis thrives as an epiphyte in high humidity and shaded environments. In its natural habitat, it grows on trees, absorbing moisture from the humid air, and requires similar conditions when grown indoors.
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent leaf burn.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil dries out. Ensure the potting mix drains well, as Hoya subquintuplinervis is prone to root rot if left in standing water.
- Humidity: This plant enjoys high humidity, ideally around 60-80%. Regular misting or placing it near a humidifier will help keep it happy.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures range from 60°F to 85°F (15°C to 29°C). Avoid exposure to cold temperatures below 50°F.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix that mimics its natural epiphytic environment, such as a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk.
Fun Fact:
This specific clone, discovered and propagated by Epiphytica, is known for its deeply veined leaves and its pure white flowers. The blooms are clustered in tight groups, creating a globe-like effect, and while small, they make a significant impact when they appear. Unlike many Hoyas with colored coronas, the flowers of this clone are entirely white, adding a clean and classic look to the plant.
