Origin and Description:
Hoya serpens is a trailing epiphyte native to the Himalayan region, including areas like Bhutan, Nepal, and India. This species is known for its small, round, fuzzy leaves, which grow densely along its vines. The plant produces unique, fuzzy, light green flowers with white coronas, sometimes showing a slight hint of pink toward the center. Discovered by Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1883, Hoya serpens continues to fascinate collectors with its dainty foliage and charming blooms.

Natural Habitat:
In its natural habitat, Hoya serpens grows in cool, high-altitude environments. It clings to trees in tropical forests where humidity is high and light is filtered, allowing the plant to thrive without direct sunlight.

Care Tips:
Growing Hoya serpens can be challenging, but with the right environment, it can be highly rewarding. One key to success is maintaining high humidity, ideally around 60-90%. Many collectors have found that Hoya serpens thrives in enclosed spaces like greenhouse cabinets or cloches, which help keep humidity stable. However, transitioning this plant from high to low humidity environments can be tricky—plants often struggle if not acclimated properly.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light for 4-6 hours per day is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.
  • Humidity: High humidity is essential. If grown in typical household humidity (40-50%), make sure to acclimate the plant slowly. Misting and the use of a humidity tray can help.
  • Temperature: Keep temperatures between 55°F and 80°F (13°C to 27°C). The plant will suffer in temperatures below 50°F.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk.

Fun Fact:
Although many Hoyas produce noticeable nectar, Hoya serpens is unique in that its flowers release very little nectar despite their fuzzy appearance and delicate scent

Will benefit from high humidity care. Will likely require humidifiers, daily misting, grouping with other plants, and more.

Cold Tolerant: Lowest 50F/10C

This hoya will tolerate cooler conditions than most.

Does Not Sunstress

This plant will not change color under bright light.
