Origin and Description:
Hoya 'Rebecca' is a hybrid between Hoya lacunosa (Langkawi Island) and Hoya obscura. Created by Antone Jones at Spring Valley Tropicals, this plant is well-loved for its trailing growth habit and small, oval-shaped leaves. Under bright light, the green leaves take on beautiful hues of red or purple, adding visual appeal. In addition to its attractive foliage, Hoya 'Rebecca' produces clusters of fuzzy, star-shaped pink flowers with golden yellow centers. The flowers are sweetly fragrant and bloom readily, making it a popular choice among collectors.

Natural Habitat:
This hybrid mirrors the natural habitat of its parent species, Hoya lacunosa and Hoya obscura, which thrive as epiphytes in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. These plants grow in humid, shaded environments, which can be easily replicated indoors with proper care.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Hoya 'Rebecca' prefers bright, indirect light. Its leaves will turn a deep red or purple when exposed to higher levels of sunlight, but avoid harsh direct sunlight that can scorch the leaves. For best results, provide plenty of filtered light to maintain healthy growth and encourage blooming.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Be sure to allow the water to drain completely, as standing water can cause root rot. Overwatering is a common issue, so it is important to let the soil dry out between waterings.
  • Humidity: Hoya 'Rebecca' thrives in high humidity levels, ideally between 60-80%. If your home has lower humidity, you can supplement it by misting the plant regularly or placing it near a humidifier. Grouping it with other plants can also create a more humid microenvironment.
  • Temperature: This plant prefers temperatures ranging from 60°F to 77°F (16°C to 25°C). It does not tolerate cold well, so protect it from drafts and temperatures below 50°F.
  • Soil: Use a lightweight, well-draining potting mix for Hoya 'Rebecca. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk is ideal for providing aeration while preventing water from pooling at the roots. Repot the plant every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and encourage healthy growth.
  • Fertilizer: During the growing season, feed Hoya 'Rebecca' with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month. This will help promote strong growth and blooming. Reduce fertilization during the fall and winter months when the plant's growth slows down.

Fun Fact:
The flowers of Hoya 'Rebecca' bloom from persistent spurs, which continue to produce flowers over time. Unlike many flowering plants, Hoyas will keep producing blooms from the same spurs, so be sure not to cut them off. Over time, Hoya 'Rebecca' will reward you with frequent, fragrant blooms from the same spot!

Care Needs

Bright diffused light

Recreate conditions under a tree canopy, where plants receive lots of light, but it is filtered through the foliage of the trees above. Your light should be bright enough to cast soft shadows.

Low Humidity: Ideally Above 40%

This Hoya tolerates a drier environment. However, it could still benefit from light humidity care, including misting and grouping together with other houseplants. May require humidifier in cooler, drier months.

Loves Heat: Lowest 70F/21C

This hoya does not do well in cold conditions, so be sure to keep in a greenhouse or other temperature controlled space.

Does Sunstress

This plant has evolved to shift color when exposed to bright sunlight, much like a human getting a tan. This does not harm the plant with proper care.
