Hoya ‘Rachel’
Origin and Description:
Hoya 'Rachel' is a sister cultivar to the popular Hoya 'Rebecca', both originating from the same pod but exhibiting distinct differences. This hybrid, created by Antone Jones at Spring Valley Tropicals in the late 2000s, is a result of a cross between Hoya lacunosa (Langkawi Island) and Hoya obscura. While the two plants come from the same seed pod, their seedlings looked so different that Jones gave them separate names, Rachel and Rebecca. Hoya 'Rachel' is known for its pointed oval leaves, which are a vibrant green with lighter veins. When exposed to bright light, the leaves can take on a reddish hue, creating a stunning contrast.
Natural Habitat:
This hybrid, much like its parent species, hails from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, where Hoyas thrive in humid, epiphytic environments. Hoya 'Rachel' carries on the resilient nature of its parent plants, making it adaptable to indoor growing conditions.
Care Instructions:
- Light: Bright, indirect light will encourage Hoya 'Rachel' to develop its rich reddish leaf color. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorching.
- Watering: Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering. Be sure to provide good drainage, as Hoya 'Rachel' is sensitive to overwatering.
- Humidity: This plant enjoys moderate to high humidity (60-80%), though it can tolerate average household levels. Mist regularly or use a humidity tray to help it thrive.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 60°F and 77°F (16°C to 25°C). Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 50°F.
- Soil: A well-draining mix with perlite, orchid bark, and coco husk is perfect for keeping Hoya 'Rachel healthy and preventing root rot.
Fun Fact:
Hoya 'Rachel' blooms readily once established, producing clusters of fuzzy pink flowers with golden yellow centers. These flowers are not only visually stunning but also release a sweet fragrance, making it a delight for both the eyes and the nose!
This unique cultivar, alongside Hoya 'Rebecca', offers collectors a beautiful blend of foliage and floral appeal, showcasing the diversity that can come from a single seed pod.
