Origin and Discovery:
Hoya multiflora, commonly known as the Shooting Star Hoya, is an epiphytic plant native to tropical Asia, specifically found in regions like China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It was first described by botanist Carl Ludwig Blume in 1823. This plant typically grows in lowland and hilly forests, often thriving on trees in its natural habitat .
Natural Habitat:
In the wild, Hoya multiflora is found growing as an epiphyte in open forests and bushlands, at elevations ranging from 500 to 1,200 meters. Its natural environments include mixed dipterocarp forests, mangroves, and limestone forests, where it enjoys a humid and tropical climate .
Description:
Hoya multiflora is known for its unique, star-shaped flowers that resemble shooting stars, hence its common name. These flowers are usually white to yellowish-white with orange tips, and they form large clusters that can include 20 to 50 flowers. The flowers emit a sweet fragrance, especially noticeable in the evening. The leaves are bright green, oblong to lanceolate, and have a thick, succulent texture .
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light levels. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves.
- Watering: Sensitive to overwatering. Water thoroughly but let the soil dry out between waterings to avoid root rot.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity. Regular misting or using a humidity tray can help maintain moisture levels.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C). Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 50°F (10°C) for extended periods.
