Hoya latifolia (textured veins UPT009)
Origin and Description:
Hoya latifolia (textured veins UPT009) is a distinctive clone I acquired from Indonesia in 2018, originally labeled as Hoya latifolia. However, this specific clone stands apart from others due to its pronounced, textured veins, which give the leaves a unique and striking appearance. After years of growing it, I have yet to come across another Hoya latifolia clone that closely resembles this one, leading me to believe that it is one of the most stunning clones available. Its thick, broad leaves are characterized by deep veins that create a textured surface, adding to its visual appeal.
It took me a considerable amount of time before I felt comfortable propagating it, as I was quite reluctant to prune my mother plant. The plant looks absolutely magnificent on my Hoya wall, where it has become a showpiece, thanks to its lush growth and unique appearance.
Natural Habitat:
Hoya latifolia is native to tropical regions across Southeast Asia, where it grows epiphytically in humid forests. It thrives in environments with filtered light, high humidity, and consistent moisture, clinging to trees and absorbing nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch, though brighter light can enhance the leaf's veining.
- Watering: Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. As an epiphyte, it enjoys well-drained environments.
- Humidity: This Hoya clone thrives in moderate to high humidity (60-80%), which mimics its natural tropical habitat.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 60°F and 80°F (15°C to 27°C). Avoid exposing the plant to cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F.
- Soil: A well-draining mix, such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk, is ideal for promoting healthy growth.
FAQ: Why Are My Hoya Latifolia (Textured Veins UPT009) Leaves Growing Thinner with No Texture?
If you’re noticing thinner leaves and less texture on your Hoya Latifolia (Textured Veins UPT009), the most likely reason is light exposure. Hoyas develop more prominent veins and thicker leaves when exposed to higher light levels. If your plant is growing in lower light, it may produce thinner, less textured leaves.
What Can You Do?
- Increase Light: Move your Hoya to a brighter spot or closer to a grow light. Bright, indirect light is key for showcasing those beautiful textured veins.
- Gradually Adjust: If increasing light exposure, do so slowly to avoid shocking the plant. Too much light too quickly can cause leaf burn.
- Monitor Growth: After increasing light, new leaves should start showing the signature veins and thickness.
Make sure your plant isn’t in direct harsh sunlight, as it can lead to burning, but aim for bright indirect light to bring out the best in your Hoya’s growth.
