Hoya davidcummingii

Origin and Description: Hoya davidcummingii is a stunning vining plant native to the Philippines, particularly found in the Bulusan Volcano National Park in Sorsogon Province. It thrives in humid forest edges, growing both as an epiphyte and a lithophyte. This species features small, thick, elliptical leaves with dark green upper surfaces and lighter undersides. The plant's wiry stems help it anchor to supports, and it blooms prolifically throughout the year. Its fragrant rose-red flowers with yellow centers are one of its most attractive features, often compared to the shape of a waxy porcelain star. Blooms can last up to 5 days, and the plant is known to bloom even during winter.

Natural Habitat: Found in the tropical rainforests of Southern Luzon, Hoya davidcummingii grows at forest edges, typically clinging to trees or rocks. Its native environment provides warm temperatures and high humidity, which are key to its growth and blooming cycles.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight, though it can tolerate lower light levels. Direct sun may burn the leaves, so filtered light is ideal.
  • Watering: Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so a well-draining soil mix is essential.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity but can adapt to moderate indoor humidity levels. Using a humidity tray or misting regularly can enhance its growth.
  • Temperature: Optimal temperatures range from 60-85°F (16-29°C). It does not tolerate cold drafts or frost.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining, airy mix, such as an orchid bark or coco husk blend, to mimic its epiphytic nature.

Fun Fact: Hoya davidcummingii is named in honor of Australian Hoya collector David Cumming, and despite its beauty, it was once incorrectly identified and sold as Hoya gracilis until its correct classification in 1995
