Hoya verticillata (acuta variegated)
Origin and Description:
Hoya verticillata is a versatile and widely distributed species found throughout Southeast Asia, including regions like India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It was previously known as Hoya acuta, and this variegated form is especially popular for its stunning foliage. The leaves are typically thick and lance-shaped with beautiful variegation, featuring a creamy white or yellow center and green edges. This adds an elegant touch to any plant collection.
Natural Habitat:
In the wild, Hoya verticillata can be found growing as an epiphyte in coastal forests, mangroves, and even peat swamps. It thrives in humid, shaded environments, where it can climb trees or grow along the forest floor.
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause the variegation to fade or burn the leaves.
- Watering: Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. The plant is relatively drought-tolerant but performs best with regular watering.
- Humidity: Performs well in moderate humidity, though it can tolerate lower humidity levels if necessary. Aim for around 40-60% humidity for optimal growth.
- Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (16°C to 29°C). It is sensitive to cold and should be protected from drafts or cold snaps.
- Sunstress: Unlike some Hoyas, Hoya verticillata does not develop color changes or “sunstress” under bright light, which means it will maintain its beautiful variegation without developing reddish or purple tones.
Fun Fact:
Hoya verticillata has a number of synonyms, including Hoya parasitica and Hoya acuta, which can sometimes confuse even experienced collectors. The plant’s adaptability allows it to thrive in a variety of environments, from coastal mangroves to tropical rainforests, making it a resilient and easy-to-care-for species
